Reflection for February 20

Liquor is a giant killer, and nobody who has not
had to deal with the Giant many many times
has any right to speak out against the Giant Killer.

—Ernest Hemingway

Reflection

Many of us are still childish when we proclaim, "I can
do it myself." Hemingway thought he could, but the
Giant Killer got him. Alcohol has a mighty army
assembled to kill those of us who have the disease. It
has the law on its side, it has society, it has the medical
profession that says it's "O.K." in moderation, it has
the church, it has history and tradition on its side.

Affirmation

Let me not get into battle today. I'm no coward if I
walk away knowing it takes two to stage a war.
