The demon of intemperance ever seems
to have delighted in sucking the blood of genius
and generosity.
—Abraham Lincoln
Reflection
Lincoln was a man who understood the disease of
alcoholism. He had compassion for those who suf-
fered from it, though the thinking of the time held
that temperance was a reflection of willpower and
good character.
Affirmation
Even though it is a disease, I have the personal respon-
sibility this day to do all I can for my recovery. Let me
not bullshit myself that I am helpless or powerless.
